Les deux vies de Jean Romain
On croyait connaître Jean Romain : acteur et animateur du débat sur l'école, en Suisse romande, cette école mise à mal par l'assaut conjugué des libéraux et des pédagogistes (il faut « mettre l'élève au centre »). Le philosophe inspiré qui dénonce la « dérive émotionnelle », « le temps de la déraison » ou encore, « la rédemption par la barbarie marchande ». Le romancier fasciné par la Grèce et l'antiquité, ses mythes, ses dieux. Oui, l'on croyait bien connaître Jean Romain, le personnage public en tout cas, mais il faut lire son dernier livre, Rejoindre l'horizon*, pour découvrir l'autre visage de cet écrivain valaisan protéiforme.Tout commence, comme souvent, par un départ: l'écrivain, renouant avec une passion de jeunesse, aime à se lancer dans de grandes virées à moto, « les yeux fixés au loin, là où le point de fuite se dérobe », nourissant le fantasme de rejoindre l'horizon. Cet élan vers un ailleurs rêvé est stoppé net, un beau matin, par l'irruption de la maladie: l'auteur apprend qu'il souffre d'un cancer. Or, chose étrange, il n'a pas peur, il n'est pas même inquiet : le médecin ne parle pas de lui, c'est sûr, mais d'un autre qui serait comme un corps étranger, un ennemi intime qu'il devra désormais combattre, mais qui n'est pas lui.
Cette cassure, dans la vie de l'auteur, provoque plusieurs bouleversements: d'abord, c'est le cours de la vie qui est cassé, l'avenir est incertain, le passé remonte à la mémoire avec l'évocation des années de collège, puis de l'internat à Saint-Maurice (belles pages où Jean Romain rend hommage à ses maîtres, connus ou inconnus, à tous ceux qui lui ont inoculé le virus de la lecture et des livres.) Le temps de la vie est cassé : la chute menace à tout instant. Le corps, comme l'esprit, peut vous trahir. C'est la première leçon de la maladie. L'être est brisé, à jamais partagé, mais cette faille qui s'ouvre en lui permet aussi l'émerveillement. Comme le dit Leonard Cohen: « There's a crack in everything/ That's how the light gets in ». C'est par cette faille que pénètre la lumière.
Le temps de la vie est brisé ; l'identité aussi. « Tout en nous est repli, des circonvolutions du cerveau à celles de l'intestin, la nature a replié dans notre corps comme des draps dans les armoires nos organes qui, sans cela, prendraient trop de place. L'âme aussi est plissée, ses strates sont empilées comme les sédiments du temps, il faut prendre son mal en patience pour n'en parcourir que la moitié et y débusquer les fantômes qui s'y cachent. » Tout se passe comme si la maladie avait scindé l'être en deux, séparant à jamais l'âme et le corps. Seconde cassure, aussi profonde et douloureuse que celle du temps. Reprenant à son compte l'expression de Bataille, Jean Romain évoque ici l'expérience intérieure qui place l'individu face à ses propres limites, incapable de dépasser son propre horizon.
Cette seconde cassure provoque, dans le livre de Jean Romain, une sorte de nouveau départ, dans le mythe et la fiction cette fois. Devenu Centaure, cet animal mythologique mi-homme mi-cheval, l'auteur enfourche sa moto à la fois pour rejoindre l'horizon et pour fuir la maladie qui le talonne. C'est alors qu'intervient Coronis, une jeune femme que le Centaure emmène en amazone sur sa moto. Le couple imaginaire va revenir vers l'origine, cette mer intérieure, la Méditerranée, qui est le berceau de notre culture.
Longtemps, le narrateur s'est cru indestructible. La maladie l'a ramené à la réalité. C'est-à-dire à sa condition d'homme libre et mortel. Le beau livre de Jean Romain nous restitue les étapes de ce voyage intérieur, qui est une quête de soi et du monde. Porté par une urgence singulière, Rejoindre l'horizon commence comme une réflexion aiguë sur la maladie, puis prend la forme d'un récit de guérison et s'achève enfin comme un conte oriental, où se mêlent érotisme et gastronomie, à la manière de Salambô ou d'Hérodias de Flaubert. Ou des Grandes odalisques de monsieur Ingres…

Depuis des années, je me demandais ce qu’Ulysse avait bien pu entendre lorsqu’il s’était fait attacher au mât de son bateau, tandis qu’il longeait l’îlot des Sirènes. La légende, chacun le sait, voulait que ceux qui entendaient ce chant de mort terminaient là leur chemin de marin. Moi, mon bateau a été une moto. Et avec ce livre, je tente de cerner un peu ce qu’Ulysse a entendu. C’est surprenant.

C'est son fils Jerome (dit la Teigne) qui raconte l'histoire, trace le portrait d'une mère aux manières insolentes qui n'a pas froid aux yeux, comme on dit, et brave les dangers les plus extrêmes. Mais c'est plus qu'un portrait, une photographie aux contours plus ou moins nets : il s'agit d'une légende (toute mère, pour son fils, n'est-elle pas une légende vivante ?) et aussi d'une interrogation sur l'origine de l'écriture. Comment devient-on écrivain, et pourquoi ? Chez Charyn, exilé russe parmi les exilés, puis chassé de l'école, écrire est une opération de survie : « il fallait que nous fixions chaque mot, que nous le fassions résonner sur notre langue, avant qu'il ne consente à nous livrer son secret. Les mots flottaient, accrochés à un filin, tels des navires sur une mer moutonneuse, et il fallait leur accorder toute l'attention d'un capitaine au long cours si l'on voulait jamais apprendre à lire. »

One thing I have always found wrong with other “option” themes is the fact that all the work goes into the core and for some reason noone managed to shun out a decent 2.0 or 2.5 design template. Yes, 50% is that you can´t do it all. The other 50% that you can´t add all the design snippets just because when giving more adjustability you have more ways to mess the theme up so making it rigid is a must. But still I long for some theme that has both of these parts covered. I will certainly try your theme out.
